Image
Monopoly is a situation whereby there is a single producer, supplier or seller of a particular good or service. Monopoly can also arise when a producer or supplier offers a product or service which does not have substitutes. Also, the former National Electric Power Authority/Power Holding Company of Nigeria (NEPA/PHCN) was a monopoly until 2005 when the Electric Power Sector Reform (EPSR) Act enabled private sector participation in some aspects of electricity services – especially generation and distribution.  As a lone player in t...

What is your assessment of the general state of the Nigerian economy? May 29, 2023 saw the emergence of subsidy removal, that’s fine. Sincerely few individuals, like powerful individuals, you know were conning the resources of the petroleum sector in the country and it needed to be stopped, which was done by President Bola Tinubu. However, the unification of the naira was the mistake the current President did. Those two things shouldn’t have come in the immediate succession. Subsidy removal, yes, but the unification of the naira was the big blow that actually scattered Nigeria’s economy. Subsidy removal will have its effect, yes we do appreciate that, but t...

Dominance Dilemma: Market Consolidation and Averting Potential Monopoly in Nigerian Telecoms Sector - Olayinka Adigun

Image
Over the years, and using its financial might and perceived technological advancement, South Africa has exported power houses across African countries but none more sizable than into Nigeria. Nigeria being the largest economy and population on the continent has historically appeared a favoured destination for businesses.  Many of these economic power houses provided economic advancement and some have dominated their industries with positive experiences . There are however, also negatives that sometimes outweigh the positives.  Due to their sizes, some of them have come to dominate the markets they operate in.  The issue of dominance becomes more pertinent during economic downturns especially as Nigerians get poorer by the day.  Nigeria’s GDP per capita for 2022 stands at $2,184, materially down from around $3,200 in 2014 and almost the same as it was in 2008.  South Africa’s GDP per capita is $6,770 in 2022, three times that of ordinary...

The frustration of having potential without a platform, is higher in comparison to having no potential at all. The challenges faced by SME owners during an era when ...
